Mental Imagery and Visualization
Mental Imagery is the “ability of the unconscious mind to generate images that have calming, healing effects on the body” (Seaward, 2018).
While visualisation is one aspect of mental imagery where there is conscious direction of self imagery. Metal imagery has many benefits including reducing stress, establishing purpose and positive thinking for increased performance.
Background
Mental imagery has been used for centuries as a way to access the health and full potential of the body, mind and soul. It became abandoned when the western culture deemed it unsophisticated but was reintroduced by Freud and Juan in the twentieth century. Mental imagery is still relatively new and not currently recognized by western medicine but it is being heavily researched. Researchers now understand that only 10 percent of the brain cells are used for conscious thought so the other 90% is associated with the unconscious mind. This type of research has been targeted toward cancer and trauma patients but this technique can be done by all people.
Proper Use of Technique
Visual must be individualized
Must be positive connotation to the imagery
Images must relate to the body and mins
Imagery must be correct and accurate
Maintain consistent dialogue
Must include treatment or outcome
